David’s patent practice covers an extensive range of chemistry, including food chemistry, polymers, films, alloys, pharmaceuticals and dental materials; as well as engineering fields. In addition to patents, David also has extensive practice in trade marks, designs and copyright, which allows him to give practical, commercially-focused advice across all aspects of intellectual property.

David specialises in patents in the chemical and engineering fields. In the chemical area, he has particular expertise in brewing chemistry, confectionery, polymers, resins, films and composites, imaging materials, agrochemicals, catalysts and catalyst supports, pigments, dental materials and pharmaceuticals. In engineering, David’s experience includes packaging, consumer products, toxicological testing, filtration media, nursery equipment and toys, garden power tools, dental apparatus, air-conditioning equipment, chemical processing machinery and construction machinery.

David has considerable experience of oral proceedings at the European Patent Office (EPO), both before the Examining and Opposition Divisions and before the Boards of Appeal.

After a period in industrial chemistry research, David joined the IP profession and was one of only four candidates in his year to pass all UK patent attorney finals papers in one sitting.  From the start, David’s practice has encompassed intellectual property in all its main branches – patents, trade marks, designs and copyright, including handling contentious issues for clients, both asserting and defending his clients’ rights and supporting litigation where necessary. David has worked with clients of all sizes, including multinational businesses, SMEs, university spin-outs and start-ups, and is often called upon by clients to provide freedom-to-operate advice and conduct IP audits.
